It gives the impression that the practice is more prevalent than it is though, since these posts must stay up for a long time. What 1700+ player wants to play someone rated 500 points lower?
I notice low rating players sometimes put an invite in for high rated players..
Any idea what the reasonings are?

Well, for starters, when you get a provisional rating, you end up playing with those low rating, and no one that's one's true strength is willing to give you a game. It's difficult to get the right players for me. I usually desire 1600s. Where are they at? So, that's why I try to get games with 1600s. Right now I'm in the 1400s. According to the past, I should be playing at a 1600-1800 rating.

Edit: I had the same problem myself, so i had to waste my time duffing up 1300's

Please dont be arrogant !.. ive just started here and my rating id in the 1300s but i play blitz on icc, 5 min games most of the time and there my rating is 1500 roughly and ive beaten IMs .. the reason ud lower people challenge higher is for rating points advancement.. Dont think your special coz u got a rating 300 points higher .. come on challenge me!? not saying il beat you but il give you a good game
Originally posted by PeakiteYou are forgetting that playing someone 500 points higher than you doesn't effect your rating. You could loose 20 games and only loose 20 points of your rating. That is also the reason they take so long to be accepted, the higher rated player doesn't stand to gain anything out of a week or two's effort.

Like everybody else was saying, it's mostly to learn from those who are better. Take me for instance. I'm at a 1050 because I keep trying to play harder opponents and I lose. I'm not that good to begin with, but if I was playing 900s I wouldn't be getting any better. I usually aim for opponents in the 1200-1300 range so that I can improve. Granted, that's not as huge a difference as 1300 and 1700, but the premise is still there.
